I’ve been fascinated by generational shifts and trends for a long time. Earlier this year my friend Marsha Collier, suggested I read Ken Gronbach’s Age Curve, How to Profit from the Coming Demographic Storm.
This book really confirmed what I have been seeing and living the past 3 years, since launching my own business. Ken masterfully outlines the impact of shifting demographics and what this means today, but more importantly in the next 10 years. Anyone who is in business, the workplace and markets would greatly benefit from reading this book. Gronbach points to and puts great importance and emphasis on Generation Y, as the largest and soon to be primary demographic who will be the dominant force on all levels.
If you consider women make up 51.5% of the full time workforce, control 66% of global consumer spending and make up 60% of college students, the targeting of Gen Y women will be a very important marketing decision.
Gen Y women are already making their move and mark, and they are VERY different from any other generation, simple due to when they were born and the world they have grown up in.
No glass ceilings here, Gen Y women want to be and will be successful and are very entrepreneurial. They know how to use and leverage technology. Only one liability I see is how growing up in technology has impacted their “interpersonal skills”. They are much more comfortable texting rather than talking on the phone! I am confident they will understand just how important “the power of personal connections” are and that they will develop them as they go out and live in the real world and are mentored by the Boomer’s who grew up with only personal relationships!
